We always have music playing in the HERZ. (or, well-placed silence). Here is a small sampling of our favorite staff-curated mixes, heard playing in our café and at full-volume in our semi-professional studio space. We tend toward an eclecticism we hope you will find to be wide-ranging and well-curated; in an effort to avoid pure dilettantism, we also do occasional deep dives into individual artists, guides to select scenes/genres, and listening sessions for individual albums (or other sound works, e.g. recorded symphonies or bootleg house mixes). We especially like ambient and drone.

We are especially inspired by these fellow music-makers and sound-lovers: Pauline Oliveros; Éliane Radigue; John Cage; Erik Satie; Pandit Pran Nath; La Monte Young & Marian Zazeela; Terry Riley; Steve Reich; Alvin Lucier; Phill Niblock; Frankie Knuckles; Richard D. James (Aphex Twin); John & Alice Coltrane; Miles Davis; Laurie Spiegel; Laurie Anderson; Suzanne Ciani; Wendy Carlos; Hildegard Westerkamp & Hildegard of Bingen; Charles Ives; Pierre Boulez; Iannis Xenakis; Edgard Varèse; Daniel Lopatin (Oneohtrix Point Never); Patricia Taxxon; Robert Ashley; David Portner (Avey Tare of Animal Collective; shout-outs to Deakin, Panda Bear & Geologist too); good ol' Bach (J. S. and C. P. E.; sorry J. C., don't know you well enough), Mozart, Beethoven, Berlioz, Chopin, Schumann, Debussy, Ravel, Rachmaninoff; Stevie Wonder; Marvin Gaye; and of course, Arnold Schoenberg.
